British Columbia Steelhead Flies Here are some flies that customer's have ordered from Grabflies, and have done very well with in British Columbia (Dean and Skeena river and it's tributaries). In lower water summer conditions go smaller, in higher water and colder conditions go bigger. | | |
Neo Skagit Leech, MethowA custom design by Grabflies. Design idea came from combining the famous Skagit Minnow with the new Intruder style trailing hook. This fly has lots of action in the water with a large profile. This Neo Methow Skagit Leech is a smaller version of the original Methow Skagit Leech, which has more black in it. It is tied with a hidden nickle bead - smaller sizes lighter cone. The hidden bead helps prop up the Marabou. The fly swims different, and snags less as the bead will not snag on rocks.
Regular size has a hidden .25 inch bead, and is three inches long. Fly is tied and glued in every step of it's construction - tied to last. Size: 2.5, 3 inches| Size 2 Owner hook (want a bigger hook for big Steelhead and Salmon - Neo Skagit Ostrich Leech, Methow (Click Here)

Stu's Metal Head Tube, Olive/OrangeStu Foxall's latest creation is a tube fly utilizing the Pro Sportfisher Ultra Sonic Cones. These cones are made of brass and are slotted. The Ultra Sonic Cone adds some weight to the fly, but is still very easy to lift out of the water due to the venting holes, while maintaining the capability to create a vortex behind the disc, allowing soft materials to swim freely instead of collapsing in hard current. Very nice tie up. Make sure you take a long some of these on your next Steelhead fishing trip.

Sili-Leg Intruders, Red/OrangeThe Intruder has quickly become one of the most popular steelhead patterns on the West Coast. It is a large fly that was designed by the West Coast steelhead guide Ed Ward, with the help and feedback of fellow anglers Scott Howell, Jerry French, and Dec Hogan. Since its inception, there have been numerous variations, and it is safe to say that it is more of a style of fly rather than a pattern. Our Sili-Leg Intruders are tied on medium length 35mm Waddington Shanks with 3/16-inch brass eyes. Stock flies come with a Gamakatsu Octopus size 2 hook. Spider LeechThe Spider Leech is a new name for the Rubber Leg K Moal , with the addition of only medium size colored rubber legs and new colors. The name came from the spider leg (fly only has six legs, not eight) look when hanging from my drying rod when I tie them. See photo below. Rubber Leg K Moal is a K-Moal with rubber legs added, which is a light version of the Kahuna Leech (shows how bead is hidden)
This fly has a weighted bead but it is tied in the rear some - hidden. This effects how the fly swims/swings through the river. It has a flatter/level angle. Also the hidden 1/4 inch nickel bead gives the fly more silhouette - bigger shoulder. NEW for 2017 summer. Size: 2.5 inches. Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well. Custom Moal Leeches are tied by Grabflies.com in the good old USA. Fish Magnet Single Shank Winter FliesMy most versatile winter fly.Tied on a long heavy streamer shank with a hidden small bead. These are all tied at 4" and perfect in most conditions except for extreme dark, or dirty water. They don't move quite as well as the articulated flies but the full length materials, especially the grizzly hackle are very squid like and has been proven over and over again by me and all of team Grabflies with the Grabflies Skagit leach. This is my version of that fly with Rhea and longer and more Grizzly tentacles.
- Purple/pink- glacial, stained to green water. Great fly. Fish below was caught on this fly in lower B.C. 3/1/17. In green water 4' visibility.
- Black/pink- dark dirty water to green or even clear water but really shines in water that requires a full sillouette on coastal water. This fly is Chrome in the bank!
This 35" Chromer savagely grabbed a purple/ pink with 4' visibility in green water. Wild fish are a treasure!

Fish Magnet Fall FliesDouble shoulder Rhea.
I started tying these for last year with a two shoulder section front and rear with a slim shiny or diamond braid middle. It is a LOT of Rhea with Front and rear fox shoulders that hold the Rhea and a little flash out like tentacles! It proved AMAZING on fall steelhead, wild and hatchery. Then when fall Chinook came in with the steelhead it wrecked them too! Very expensive Rhea and grizzly tentacle tie for max movement.
Small hidden bead weight for ballast so they swim right. Non weighted same cost but specify weighted or non weighted.
Size: 3- 3.5"- Purple/ Red 1/2 purple and 1/2 red perfect for bright days and Chinook in the system. My number one fly last fall for Steelhead and kings. 3-4" perfect for mid visibility.3/4 purple 1/4 red for darker water, darker days with same results!
- Methow blue/green- clear water killer for Steelhead and Coho. If Chinook enter the system use purple / red. 1/2 and 1/2.
My best fall steelhead on a half purple half red 4". About 17 lbs!

Morrish Trailer Trash, Night ShadeThe Trailer Trash by Ken Morrish is a large, Intruder-like pattern that makes no apologies. Like many, Ken admittedly was inspired by the design features of the Intruder to create a large profile fly that has great movement and little bulk. At nearly 4-5 inches, this large creature swims frequently in Steelhead rivers around the West, at risk of being eaten in a violent manner. Pacific Salmon and Sea-run Browns also like the way it tastes. A two stage Intruder with soft Marabout that swims.

Fish Magnet Summer Series, Klickitat Sunrise These flies are for early summer through fall and are a smaller version of my Fall flies. These flies run about 2.5 inches. The Body colors are peekaboo and come in and out of view as the fly undulates in the water currents. When these flies hit slow water they open up and get very squidy or spidery that fish really seem to dig. This last year or so I have really been targeting the slower water next to a faster seam and the Fish Magnet Flies have evolved to target these fish. I also like the looks of these in faster head of run water because not only do they move well in it but lift out of the water to set your anchor and cast well. As they are smaller with less materials, they are also cheaper. I still use as much full length ostrich hurl , marabou, and grizzly hackle that I can to maximize movement. These flies are tied on a heavy streamer shank and are heavy enough without additional weight to sink at about a type 3 to 5 rate, so are perfect for lighter setups as well. I offer three different color combinations and are about the only colors I ever use. Klickitat Sunrise Purple/Red- Name coined by Jeff here at Grablies for its incredible effectiveness on the Klickitat River. This color combo is my first choice starting as early as June and extremely effective through late fall for Steelhead and King Salmon. For some reason, hatchery steelhead really key in on this color as well on heavily fished rivers all over the West Coast.

Fish Magnet Summer Series, PurpleThese flies are for early summer through fall and are a smaller version of my Fall flies. Purple with peekaboo Green body- This fly is very effective on east side, inland rivers like the Methow, Wenatchee, Grand Ronde, ClearWater and even the North Umpqua as we found out. Also good in the fall before the river gets cold. It is also a good all-around summer color on most rivers, especially early and late in the day when darker water conditions are present.

Stu's Jungle Tail Turbo Cone, Black/BlueThese new wide-profile cones create a turbo vortex at the front of a tube fly. The turbo cone gives the fly a unique swimming action. The action combined with the soft materials, which pulsate to mimic breathing, produces a fly that drives fish crazy. Whether fishing in the slowest or hardest of currents, the fly will move and pulsate like no other pattern. In addition to the unique movements, the turbo cone also provides a little bit of weight to help get the fly down. Our Turbo Cone Tube Flies are tied on a 1.25-inch tube with a 10mm turbo cone. Comes with Size 2 trailing hook.

Improved Methow MoalAKA: Two Toned Flash Moal Leech, Blue/ChartreuseMoal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well. The combination of rabbit fur which has incredible life in the water and flashabou creates an illuminated attraction for fish. A real winner! Two Toned Flash Moal Leech - Flashabou and rabbit wrapped around a string go together. Moal Leeches have great movement in the water. They wiggle and undulate, which moves the flashabou in wave like motion reflecting colorful light waves as the fly swings across the river. Two Toned (color) Flash Moals have two different colors of flashabou tied in. The tail color is tied in after half the fly is wrapped with rabbit. The head flashabou is tied with a length of 2/3's the fly length. This works much better that two colors of flashabou tied in together at the cone.

Stu's Rhea Intruder, Blue/PurpleUsing long flowing materials is one of the key Intruder features. Sugar BunnyMy brother and I recently went to the Skeena river for the first time for Summer run fish. We had some pretty good Intel on a few runs and techniques. One thing that my source stressed was that if we waded out past our ankles that we were fishing too far out! Man was he right! It took me a few days to catch up to my brother who was fishing left handed and close because of tennis elbow in his right arm. He was really getting into the fish, hitting 4 steelhead the first day on a (Fish Magnet Summer Methow)! The biggest problem was all of the plucks, and short strikes from traveling fish. I was a zero with lots of on offs until the third day when I put on a sink 3 on my Rage head and started swinging it into the beach. Then my trip really began as I managed some nice fish mimicking my brother with a Fish Magnet Summer series Methow fly* that proved very good for Steelhead and Coho. Flash forward a couple of weeks and the same trip with Jeff at Grabflies. Fishing has been tough all over and the Skeena was no exception this year with a near record low steelhead run. We were going to have to work hard and step up to be successful. This time it was me that hit the ground running having learned my lesson! Prior to the trip I worked on a fly that would be smaller, darker, casts easily on a light polyleader and moves with very little current while showing off a red bead by the hook that would hopefully give the fish a point of attack so the hookup rate would go up with the fast traveling Skeena fish. It is basically an April Vokey Sugar Pop fly without the Rhea and an added black rabbit zonker tail with the flash right on top of the wing. Introducing the (Sugar Bunny) Man this fly really fit the bill. I could have called it the Labrador retriever because the tail looks like a dogs tail wagging the flash back and forth. Winner Winner Steelhead dinner! I had many grabs and fish on and lost along with a couple of dandy mid to upper teen steelhead caught the first two days. We think the Coho were the plucking fish, but we also lost some big steelhead deep into the battle. Jeff soon learned his lesson as I did, as he said "keeping one foot on the bank" and hit three steelhead on his third day, fishing a light tip and a light nice moving fly called the (Egg Dropping Methow Rhea Taco) one of the fish took him down the river and got off at the bank that we dubbed the Kispiox buck because of his 20# + size and nasty demeanor. Jeff also caught a some on a lightly weighted (Skagit Methow Leech) which is always a good fly to tie on. Later in the week the river cleared up some and the fish moved out from the bank and I fished another new fly that was incredibly successful, hooking three steelhead in one run on the final morning. Jeff and I managed a double as well, each catching a nice mid teen chromer! I'm dubbing my new fly (the Hoh Magnet) It is a highly visible mostly black fly with a dark blue flash wing and Lady Amhurst barbs that says "bite me" I will be adding it to the Fish Magnet fly collection as soon as I can tie some up and get them to Jeff to be available. See (customer photos) and view the awesome wild steelhead and the flies that we used to catch each! Also see Evo Bunny with Eyes (Click Here)

Greg's Kriller, BlueGreg's Kriller Constructed on the banks of the Kanektok River the killer krill, or Kriller, was designed for maximum castabilty as well as its flaring motion when swinging across hydraulic “fences” in the water column. With the weight of the dumbbell eyes at the back of the shank, the Kriller swings deep with more of a downward-diagonal profile than most traditional patterns. A devouring size for both chrome Chinook and Steelhead, having the eyes closer to the hook attracts some of the most aggressive eats you can find near tidewater!

Senyo's Artificial Intelligence, Blue/BlackThe Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is a searching style attractor baitfish pattern. Due to its synthetic build, this fly pattern is extremely durable, lightweight, and provides a serious amount of movement while it swims. The A.I. holds a great profile, retains its shimmer and translucency, and is the perfect option to combat changing water conditions. A proven pattern across the Great Lakes Region to Canadian/Alaskan waters and the West Coast. This fly has lots of movement for Steelhead.

Sili-Leg Intruders, Pink/BlackThe Intruder has quickly become one of the most popular steelhead patterns on the West Coast. Also See: Sili-Leg Intruders, Red/Orange Sili-Leg Intruders, Black/Blue

HoBo SpeyHoBo Spey - custom tied by Grabflies using quality (best) materials: A great time tested and proven Steelhead pattern. Black and blue is money for Steelhead. HoBo has lots of movement in soft water because of the Marabou. Grabflies ties this pattern with a dubbing ball before Intruder Prop hackle and then black Marabou. This stops the Marabou from collapsing flat, but instead gives the fly shape and movement. Also see Fish Taco (click here)
