Great Lakes Steelhead Truder - Product Image

Great Lakes Steelhead Truder

Great Lakes Steelhead Truder is a K-Moal with rubber legs added, plus Guinea hackle collar and colors for the Great Lakes Steelhead fishery. This fly has a hidden bead like the Kahuna Leech (shows how bead is hidden)

This fly has a weighted bead but it is tied in the rear some - hidden. This effects how the fly swims/swings through the river. It has a flatter/level angle. Also the hidden 1/4 inch nickel bead gives the fly more silhouette - bigger shoulder. NEW for 2017 summer. Size: 2.5 inches.

Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well.

Custom Moal Leeches are tied by Grabflies.com in the good old USA. Moal's are tied using the best materials on the market and are tied to last (super glue, Berkley Fireline Braid 20 LB (double over for 40 LB strength) and, quality hooks.

Steelhead Bugger with Rabbit - Product Image
Click for larger image

Steelhead Bugger with Rabbit

Grabflies.com re-designed the famous Woolly Bugger for Steelhead.

Very Popular with reports of great success

Tied on a shank with a trailing hook - this keeps the fly omnidirectional (looks the same from all angles). Also stops the Marabou tail from wrapping around the hook. This design the Marabou tail is wrapped like hackle centering the hook in the middle of the hackle and allowing the fly to have more action. the body is tied with a Rabbit Strip.

Size: 2 1/2 - 4 inches (select Size), Size 2 trailing hook

Lots of colors to select from. Every river seems to have a particular color that does best in it. Then there is the time of year when colors change.

    King Intruder Leech, Red

This fly has been a Chinook Salmon Killer Fly in colored water. I tried many different patterns and combinations, but as soon as I tied this fly up, and used the first morning in off color river conditions. I had landed three 20 lb Chinook Salmon. To make sure it was not just a special day, I went the next morning I hooked and lost a huge steelhead when tailing and landed a 16 lb King Salmon.

    I swing this fly.

Fly is tied using black cross cut rabbit strip tied on braid line like a Moal Leech, then lots of Red Rhea spun on, followed by Red Flashabou, and Red Guinea and red bead cone. The Black Rabbit core gives this fly lots of silhouette and animates the flashabou.

    Sizes:
5 inch (tied using lower and upper spun Rhea if I don't have long enough Rhea). Winter Steelhead, and King Salmon
4 inch recommended for King Salmon, and Winter Steelhead
3 inch for Steelhead and clearer water conditions for Salmon

    Flash Fish Taco

Same Profile as the Fish Taco but tied with more Flashabou.

Jeff Hickman designed the Fish Taco Spey fly specifically for Steelhead and Salmon. When Jeff Hickman gets hungry he thinks of one of his favorite things to eat - fish tacos.

The Fish Taco was designed to be un-weighted and easy to cast with lots of movement.

Like Fish Tacos - a favorite dish for hungry fly fishermen, and every cook has their own recipe. Grabflies has its recipe and custom ties these Fish Tacos by hand in Washougal, Washington.

Grabflies likes to tie Fish Tacos that are spicy and hot, and full and juicy. These Fish Tacos are delicious offerings for Steelhead and Salmon.

Since these Tacos are custom tied, Grabflies offers them in many different flavors and tie ups. You can get them in almost every color, and if you want to fish them deeper you can add Hot Cones.

Jeff Hickman likes to fish Purple Tacos in the morning, bright colors during the day, and black in the evening/dark.

    Size: 2.5 - 3 inches

Size 2 trailing hook, hung with 30 lb. Fire Wire loop.

These custom tied Fish Taco's are tied in un-weighted thread head, and medium weighted cones. The cone head Fish Taco's are now tied like the Fish Taco Supreme (click here) .

The Hoh Magnet - Product Image

    The Hoh Magnet

The Hoh Magnet by Fish Magnet Flies, Dave Robinson

My brother and I recently went to the Skeena river for the first time for Summer run fish. We had some pretty good Intel on a few runs and techniques. One thing that my source stressed was that if we waded out past our ankles that we were fishing too far out! Man was he right! It took me a few days to catch up to my brother who was fishing left handed and close because of tennis elbow in his right arm. He was really getting into the fish, hitting 4 steelhead the first day on a (Fish Magnet Summer Methow)! The biggest problem was all of the plucks, and short strikes from traveling fish. I was a zero with lots of on offs until the third day when I put on a sink 3 on my Rage head and started swinging it into the beach. Then my trip really began as I managed some nice fish mimicking my brother with a Fish Magnet Summer series Methow fly* that proved very good for Steelhead and Coho.

Flash forward a couple of weeks and the same trip with Jeff at Grabflies. Fishing has been tough all over and the Skeena was no exception this year with a near record low steelhead run. We were going to have to work hard and step up to be successful. This time it was me that hit the ground running having learned my lesson! Prior to the trip I worked on a fly that would be smaller, darker, casts easily on a light polyleader and moves with very little current while showing off a red bead by the hook that would hopefully give the fish a point of attack so the hookup rate would go up with the fast traveling Skeena fish.

It is basically an April Vokey Sugar Pop fly without the Rhea and an added black rabbit zonker tail with the flash right on top of the wing. Introducing the (Sugar Bunny) Man this fly really fit the bill. I could have called it the Labrador retriever because the tail looks like a dogs tail wagging the flash back and forth. Winner Winner Steelhead dinner!

I had many grabs and fish on and lost along with a couple of dandy mid to upper teen steelhead caught the first two days. We think the Coho were the plucking fish, but we also lost some big steelhead deep into the battle.

Jeff soon learned his lesson as I did, as he said "keeping one foot on the bank" and hit three steelhead on his third day, fishing a light tip and a light nice moving fly called the (Egg Dropping Methow Rhea Taco) one of the fish took him down the river and got off at the bank that we dubbed the Kispiox buck because of his 20# + size and nasty demeanor.

Jeff also caught a some on a lightly weighted (Skagit Methow Leech) which is always a good fly to tie on.

Later in the week the river cleared up some and the fish moved out from the bank and I fished another new fly that was incredibly successful, hooking three steelhead in one run on the final morning. Jeff and I managed a double as well, each catching a nice mid teen chromer!  I'm dubbing my new fly "the  Hoh Magnet" It is a highly visible mostly black fly with a dark blue flash wing and Lady Amhurst barbs that says "bite me" I will be adding it to the Fish Magnet fly collection as soon as I can tie some up and get them to Jeff to be available.

See (customer photos) and view the awesome wild steelhead and the flies that we used to catch each!

    Morrish Trailer Trash, Night Shade

The Trailer Trash by Ken Morrish is a large, Intruder-like pattern that makes no apologies. Like many, Ken admittedly was inspired by the design features of the Intruder to create a large profile fly that has great movement and little bulk. At nearly 4-5 inches, this large creature swims frequently in Steelhead rivers around the West, at risk of being eaten in a violent manner. Pacific Salmon and Sea-run Browns also like the way it tastes.

Tied with Rabbit instead of Marabou in front of the rear station of prop hackle and four grizzly hackles, and then another Intruder Prop hackle with some Marabou fibers on the stem in Front of bead follower by Flashabou. Swims great and will be even a better Steelhead catching instrument.

During the summer/fall season I tie in six small grizzly barred rubber legs, and in the winter medium size grizzly barred rubber legs.

Fish Magnet Summer Series, Methow - Product Image

    Fish Magnet Summer Series, Methow

These flies are for early summer through fall and are a smaller version of my Fall flies. These flies run about 2.5 inches. The Body colors are peekaboo and come in and out of view as the fly undulates in the water currents. When these flies hit slow water they open up and get very squidy or spidery that fish really seem to dig. This last year or so I have really been targeting the slower water next to a faster seam and the Fish Magnet Flies have evolved to target these fish. I also like the looks of these in faster head of run water because not only do they move well in it but lift out of the water to set your anchor and cast well.

As they are smaller with less materials, they are also cheaper. I still use as much full length ostrich hurl , marabou, and grizzly hackle that I can to maximize movement. These flies are tied on a heavy streamer shank and are heavy enough without additional weight to sink at about a type 3 to 5 rate, so are perfect for lighter setups as well.

I offer three different color combinations and are about the only colors I ever use.

Methow colors, Black/Blue/Green butt - Great for ultra-clear water especially in spring and fall. But also mid-summer as a second choice to the Klickitat Purple/Red. Also great if water temperatures are cold and clear in late fall before going to a bigger fly for winter. This fly is also very effective for early winter conditions on coastal rivers for summer and early winter steelhead.

Klickitat Sunrise Purple/Red- Name coined by Jeff here at Grablies for its incredible effectiveness on the Klickitat River. This color combo is my first choice starting as early as June and extremely effective through late fall for Steelhead and King Salmon. For some reason, hatchery steelhead really key in on this color as well on heavily fished rivers all over the West Coast.

Purple with peekaboo Green body- This fly is very effective on east side, inland rivers like the Methow, Wenatchee, Grand Ronde, ClearWater and even the North Umpqua as we found out. Also good in the fall before the river gets cold. It is also a good all-around summer color on most rivers, especially early and late in the day when darker water conditions are present.

    GTL: Grizzly Tailed Leech

A new pattern created by Grabflies, Jeff Layton. 2015/2016 winter has been the season of grizzly hackle into my patterns. It gives the fly a mottled, lighting effect, that Steelhead seem to love.

This fly is tied like a Moal leech but with all the extras found in an Intruder pattern. Unlike most Intruders this pattern is a 360 degree fly (it fishes, and swims good in all angles of the presentation).

Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well.

    Fish Taco, Fly

    (NEW Colors)

    Size 2 trailing hook

    Two colors: Olive and Black

Size 2 The popularity of this fly started in Alaska with the Dolly Lama. This is a Dorian inspired version of the old one made much better. It capitalizes on the conehead, Barred Dos-Tone rabbit zonker strips, and subtle flash. It is a devil to tie but well worth it if your going to seriously fish it. If your taking a expensive trip to Alaska then be sure to have these with you. Keep them to yourself as guides and your buddies will do anything they can to get their hands on some.

Size: 2 1/2 inches, Size 2 trailing hook

    EVO

    EVO = Evolution

    ev·o·lu·tion
    noun
    noun: evolution; plural noun: evolutions
    1.
the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth.
    synonyms:Darwinism, natural selection
    "his interest in evolution"
  • the gradual development of something, especially from a simple to a more complex form.
"the forms of written languages undergo constant evolution"
  • I designed EVO so it can be fished with either a Skagit or Scandi line. I use a lot of the same proven color patterns that I know work but every fly pattern has it own silhouette, movement, sinkability rate, and castability.

EVO is 2.5 - 3 inches long. A good summer and fall Steelhead fly.

    Sugar Bunny

I'm dubbing my new fly (the  Hoh Magnet) It is a highly visible mostly black fly with a dark blue flash wing and Lady Amhurst barbs that says "bite me" I will be adding it to the Fish Magnet fly collection as soon as I can tie some up and get them to Jeff to be available.
