Methow - This color scheme got its name when I first fished the Methow river, in the winter of 2015. I had two flies tied up in this color pattern and caught eight Steelhead in one day. Since then whenever the water has good visibility it is a go to pattern. I've caught huge Steelhead and good size Coho on this color pattern (Black/Blue/Chartreuse).

Neo Methow Skagit Leech - Product Image

Neo Methow Skagit Leech

A custom design by Grabflies. Design idea came from combining the famous Skagit Minnow with the new Intruder style trailing hook. This fly has lots of action in the water with a large profile.

This Neo Methow Skagit Leech is a smaller version of the original Methow Skagit Leech, which has more black in it. It is tied with or without a hidden .25" nickle bead - smaller sizes lighter cone. The hidden bead helps prop up the Marabou. The fly swims different, and snags less as the bead will not snag on rocks.

Lower soft water size is smaller and no wegithed cone

Regular size had a hidden .25 inch bead, and is three inches long.

Size: 2.5 - 3 inches| Size 2 Owner hook

A custom design by Grabflies. Design idea came from combining the famous Skagit Minnow with the new Intruder style trailing hook. This fly has lots of action in the water with a large profile.

This Neo Methow Skagit Leech is an updated and design change version of the original Methow Skagit Leech, which has more black in it. It is tied with a hidden .25" nickle bead . The hidden bead helps props up the Marabou. The fly swims different, and snags less as the bead will not snag on rocks.

Tied on a shank with 60lb braid line, Braid line is wrapped with diamond braid and super glued. Hook junction tubing holds the hook (new) in place).

This color combination is a great winter and BC Steelhead fly.

Fish Magnet Summer Series, Methow - Product Image
Click for larger image

Fish Magnet Summer Series, Methow

These flies are for early summer through fall and are a smaller version of my Fall flies. These flies run about 2.5 inches. The Body colors are peekaboo and come in and out of view as the fly undulates in the water currents. When these flies hit slow water they open up and get very squidy or spidery that fish really seem to dig. This last year or so I have really been targeting the slower water next to a faster seam and the Fish Magnet Flies have evolved to target these fish. I also like the looks of these in faster head of run water because not only do they move well in it but lift out of the water to set your anchor and cast well.

As they are smaller with less materials, they are also cheaper. I still use as much full length ostrich hurl , marabou, and grizzly hackle that I can to maximize movement. These flies are tied on a heavy streamer shank and are heavy enough without additional weight to sink at about a type 3 to 5 rate, so are perfect for lighter setups as well.

I offer three different color combinations and are about the only colors I ever use.

Methow colors, Black/Blue/Green butt - Great for ultra-clear water especially in spring and fall. But also mid-summer as a second choice to the Klickitat Purple/Red. Also great if water temperatures are cold and clear in late fall before going to a bigger fly for winter. This fly is also very effective for early winter conditions on coastal rivers for summer and early winter steelhead.

Methow Moal - Product Image

Methow Moal

The Methow Moal - very much like the Blue Flash with Chartreuse Butt Moal but with a smaller Chartreuse Butt. This fly was first requested to be tied and tested by Dave Robinson.

David Robinson's Steelhead caught on the Methow River using a Methow Moal Leech
Dave Robinson's Steelhead - Methow River

Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well.

Custom Moal Leeches are tied by Grabflies.com in the good old USA. Moal's are tied using the best materials on the market and are tied to last (super glue, Berkley Fireline Braid 15 LB (double over for 30 LB strength) and, quality hooks.

If you had to pick one fly to fish for Steelhead with it should be a Moal Leech.

Improved Methow Moal

AKA: Two Toned Flash Moal Leech, Blue/Chartreuse

Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well.

The combination of rabbit fur which has incredible life in the water and flashabou creates an illuminated attraction for fish. A real winner!

Two Toned Flash Moal Leech - Flashabou and rabbit wrapped around a string go together. Moal Leeches have great movement in the water. They wiggle and undulate, which moves the flashabou in wave like motion reflecting colorful light waves as the fly swings across the river. Two Toned (color) Flash Moals have two different colors of flashabou tied in. The tail color is tied in after half the fly is wrapped with rabbit. The head flashabou is tied with a length of 2/3's the fly length. This works much better that two colors of flashabou tied in together at the cone.

Neo Classic Methow

This fly is now tied in a classic tie up, and has been a super effective Steelhead fly. It first started as the Improved Methow Moal, and then evolved into Skagit Methow Leech (which has the record for catching 20 lb Steelhead).

For lower water and summer conditions this same color pattern can be found in this fly and Skagit Leech Lite.

Egg Dropping Methow Rhea Taco - Product Image

Egg Dropping Methow Rhea Taco

One of Grabflies best color patterns, the Methow (Black/King Fisher Blue/Chartreuse Butt). This Taco fly has the addition of the trailing egg inspired from Dave Robinson's Fish Magnet Summer Series Methow Leech.

Tied like a Fish Taco Fly but using Rhea instead of Ostrich Plume. This gives the fly a little less silhouette, but with the same action, plus Rhea really stands out and moves in the water.

New Design change for 2017. Bottom two photos on left: Pink and Purple and Pink represent what the new Rhea Fish Tacos look like.

Fish Magnet Articulated Series - Product Image

Fish Magnet Articulated Series

As the name implies, these flies are jointed in the middle with the mono hook line running to the front of the fly and acting like as a joint between the front and back half. These are expensive and time consuming as I am literally tying two flies.
They are weighted with a small bead mid ship to avoid bead grabs. Also aids in not getting stuck under a rock.
These have MAXIMUM movement and my new go to fly on coastal rivers in the winter. Easy to cast  with a Skagit setup. 1/2 Rhea tie.
  • Black/pink with pink flash - 5" long and maximum visibility in dark or dirty water.
  • Purple/Pink with pink flash rear and purple flash front- 5" long. great color for glacial stained rivers and dark or dirty water. My best producer lately on coastal rivers. Most recently a 21# hen and a 15# chrome hen.
  • Methow Blue/green-  4". A clear or cold water fly that is a huge producer on low, cold and clear water. Made smaller because a huge sillouette is not required on a clear river.
  • Black/Green with blue flash- 4". morning and evening fly on cold clear rivers or use with confidence all day or switch to the Methow in full light. Also effective when glacial rivers get clear.

Picture is a 39" 21# hen. I got a quick lift and snap picture on a river that allows it. Released quickly and unharmed after an epic 150 yard sustained run! Caught on a purple/pink. Grip n Mit used for easy grip to prevent struggling, dropping, or squeezing too hard. Made from no harm net material from Grabflies.

Fish Magnet Single Shank Winter Flies - Product Image
Click for larger image

Fish Magnet Single Shank Winter Flies

My most versatile winter fly.
Tied on a long heavy streamer shank with a hidden small bead. These are all tied at 4" and perfect in most conditions except for extreme dark, or dirty water. They don't move quite as well as the articulated flies but the full length materials, especially the grizzly hackle are very squid like and has been proven over and over again by me and all of team Grabflies with the Grabflies Skagit leach. This is my version of that fly with Rhea and longer and more Grizzly tentacles.

  • Purple/pink- glacial, stained to green water. Great fly. Fish below was caught on this fly in lower B.C. 3/1/17. In green water 4' visibility.
  • Black/pink- dark dirty water to green or even clear water but really shines in water that requires a full sillouette on coastal water. This fly is Chrome in the bank!
  • Methow black/ blue/green with red bead by hook eye- the perfect fly for low clear cold water. This color proven and responsible for many many fish up to 24 pounds. Also best fly ever on clear inland rivers like the Methow, Wenatchee, lower Deschutes b run fish, Clearwater. Just a very versatile fly.
  • Methow blue/green- same as above in every way without the red focus point bead. Clear water dream fly.

This 35" Chromer savagely grabbed a purple/ pink with 4' visibility in green water. Wild fish are a treasure!

Fishmagnet Winter Staple - Product Image

Fishmagnet Winter Staple

While I obviously appreciate using the finest materials in my flies, fishing the Skeena and Bulkley has opened my eyes to what is most important when I comes to catching steelhead...That is movement in slow greasy seams along the bank in dark water and the slow water next to a faster seam in clearer water. With a lot of trial and error it is absolutely hard to beat marabou! It holds its profile in faster water with a good prop, then when it hits slow water, it puffs out and breaths like a living moving critter.

Winter steelhead are notoriously anorexic, they eat and spit it out. My goals when building this fly to offer for sale was to accomplish these goals,

    1. Offer the best fly for the job at a reasonable price
2.Maximum movement in the softest of water
    3. Utilize a dark head in the front and a bright bead at the hook eye for a visual "Bite" point to try and avoid the on and off problem of fish on the hang down and in slow water.
  1.
    • #2 Owner hook on a mono stinger loop
    • Visual bead
    • Rear flashabou
    • Ice Dub body
    • Hidden bead to prop body and weight fly to avoid hanging on the bottom
    • 6 grizzly hackles +-
    • Intruder hackle
    • Marabou
    • Body Flashabou
    • Black Schlappen head
    • Each step is glued off for durability
  2. 4. Offer it in the only two color patterns that I use myself and will be using until something comes along that proves to be better, then I will adapt!

    Description

Purple/Pink- This is my go to color and I will fish it almost exclusively all winter into the late spring. All my steelhead last winter and spring came on this fly except a couple on the Methow. 3"

Methow - Maybe the best all-around color pattern we have ever found. It will work in murky water but really shines in clear water, sunny bright days. Killer fly on clear rivers like the Bogi, Quinault, Washougal, Deschutes and the like. 3"

    Fish Taco Fly

    (NEW Colors)

Jeff Hickman designed the Fish Taco Spey fly specifically for Steelhead and Salmon. When Jeff Hickman gets hungry he thinks of one of his favorite things to eat - fish tacos.

The Fish Taco was designed to be un-weighted and easy to cast with lots of movement.

Like Fish Tacos - a favorite dish for hungry fly fishermen, and every cook has their own recipe. Grabflies has its recipe and custom ties these Fish Tacos by hand in Washougal, Washington.

Grabflies likes to tie Fish Tacos that are spicy and hot, and full and juicy. These Fish Tacos are delicious offerings for Steelhead and Salmon.

Since these Tacos are custom tied, Grabflies offers them in many different flavors and tie ups. You can get them in almost every color, and if you want to fish them deeper you can add Hot Cones.

Jeff Hickman likes to fish Purple Tacos in the morning, bright colors during the day, and black in the evening/dark.

    Size: 2.5 - 3 inches

Size 2 trailing hook, hung with 30 lb. Fire Wire loop.

    Sugar Bunny - Product Image

    Sugar Bunny

My brother and I recently went to the Skeena river for the first time for Summer run fish. We had some pretty good Intel on a few runs and techniques. One thing that my source stressed was that if we waded out past our ankles that we were fishing too far out! Man was he right! It took me a few days to catch up to my brother who was fishing left handed and close because of tennis elbow in his right arm. He was really getting into the fish, hitting 4 steelhead the first day on a (Fish Magnet Summer Methow)! The biggest problem was all of the plucks, and short strikes from traveling fish. I was a zero with lots of on offs until the third day when I put on a sink 3 on my Rage head and started swinging it into the beach. Then my trip really began as I managed some nice fish mimicking my brother with a Fish Magnet Summer series Methow fly* that proved very good for Steelhead and Coho.

Flash forward a couple of weeks and the same trip with Jeff at Grabflies. Fishing has been tough all over and the Skeena was no exception this year with a near record low steelhead run. We were going to have to work hard and step up to be successful. This time it was me that hit the ground running having learned my lesson! Prior to the trip I worked on a fly that would be smaller, darker, casts easily on a light polyleader and moves with very little current while showing off a red bead by the hook that would hopefully give the fish a point of attack so the hookup rate would go up with the fast traveling Skeena fish.

It is basically an April Vokey Sugar Pop fly without the Rhea and an added black rabbit zonker tail with the flash right on top of the wing. Introducing the (Sugar Bunny) Man this fly really fit the bill. I could have called it the Labrador retriever because the tail looks like a dogs tail wagging the flash back and forth. Winner Winner Steelhead dinner!

I had many grabs and fish on and lost along with a couple of dandy mid to upper teen steelhead caught the first two days. We think the Coho were the plucking fish, but we also lost some big steelhead deep into the battle.

Jeff soon learned his lesson as I did, as he said "keeping one foot on the bank" and hit three steelhead on his third day, fishing a light tip and a light nice moving fly called the (Egg Dropping Methow Rhea Taco) one of the fish took him down the river and got off at the bank that we dubbed the Kispiox buck because of his 20# + size and nasty demeanor.

Jeff also caught a some on a lightly weighted (Skagit Methow Leech) which is always a good fly to tie on.

Later in the week the river cleared up some and the fish moved out from the bank and I fished another new fly that was incredibly successful, hooking three steelhead in one run on the final morning. Jeff and I managed a double as well, each catching a nice mid teen chromer!  I'm dubbing my new fly (the  Hoh Magnet) It is a highly visible mostly black fly with a dark blue flash wing and Lady Amhurst barbs that says "bite me" I will be adding it to the Fish Magnet fly collection as soon as I can tie some up and get them to Jeff to be available.

See (customer photos) and view the awesome wild steelhead and the flies that we used to catch each!
