Sugar Bunny

My brother and I recently went to the Skeena river for the first time for Summer run fish. We had some pretty good Intel on a few runs and techniques. One thing that my source stressed was that if we waded out past our ankles that we were fishing too far out! Man was he right! It took me a few days to catch up to my brother who was fishing left handed and close because of tennis elbow in his right arm. He was really getting into the fish, hitting 4 steelhead the first day on a (Fish Magnet Summer Methow)! The biggest problem was all of the plucks, and short strikes from traveling fish. I was a zero with lots of on offs until the third day when I put on a sink 3 on my Rage head and started swinging it into the beach. Then my trip really began as I managed some nice fish mimicking my brother with a Fish Magnet Summer series Methow fly* that proved very good for Steelhead and Coho.

Flash forward a couple of weeks and the same trip with Jeff at Grabflies. Fishing has been tough all over and the Skeena was no exception this year with a near record low steelhead run. We were going to have to work hard and step up to be successful. This time it was me that hit the ground running having learned my lesson! Prior to the trip I worked on a fly that would be smaller, darker, casts easily on a light polyleader and moves with very little current while showing off a red bead by the hook that would hopefully give the fish a point of attack so the hookup rate would go up with the fast traveling Skeena fish.

It is basically an April Vokey Sugar Pop fly without the Rhea and an added black rabbit zonker tail with the flash right on top of the wing. Introducing the (Sugar Bunny) Man this fly really fit the bill. I could have called it the Labrador retriever because the tail looks like a dogs tail wagging the flash back and forth. Winner Winner Steelhead dinner!

I had many grabs and fish on and lost along with a couple of dandy mid to upper teen steelhead caught the first two days. We think the Coho were the plucking fish, but we also lost some big steelhead deep into the battle.

Jeff soon learned his lesson as I did, as he said "keeping one foot on the bank" and hit three steelhead on his third day, fishing a light tip and a light nice moving fly called the (Egg Dropping Methow Rhea Taco) one of the fish took him down the river and got off at the bank that we dubbed the Kispiox buck because of his 20# + size and nasty demeanor.

Jeff also caught a some on a lightly weighted (Skagit Methow Leech) which is always a good fly to tie on.

Later in the week the river cleared up some and the fish moved out from the bank and I fished another new fly that was incredibly successful, hooking three steelhead in one run on the final morning. Jeff and I managed a double as well, each catching a nice mid teen chromer!  I'm dubbing my new fly (the  Hoh Magnet) It is a highly visible mostly black fly with a dark blue flash wing and Lady Amhurst barbs that says "bite me" I will be adding it to the Fish Magnet fly collection as soon as I can tie some up and get them to Jeff to be available.

See (customer photos) and view the awesome wild steelhead and the flies that we used to catch each!

Egg Dropping Methow Rhea Taco

One of Grabflies best color patterns, the Methow (Black/King Fisher Blue/Chartreuse Butt). This Taco fly has the addition of the trailing egg inspired from Dave Robinson's Fish Magnet Summer Series Methow Leech.

Tied like a Fish Taco Fly but using Rhea instead of Ostrich Plume. This gives the fly a little less silhouette, but with the same action, plus Rhea really stands out and moves in the water.

New Design change for 2017. Bottom two photos on left: Pink and Purple and Pink represent what the new Rhea Fish Tacos look like.

Neo Skagit Leech Methow CW

A custom design by Grabflies. Design idea came from combining the famous Skagit Minnow with the new Intruder style trailing hook. This fly has lots of action in the water with a large profile.

This Methow Skagit Leech is a Clear Water version of the original Methow Skagit Leech, which has more black in it. It is tied with a hidden .25" nickle bead. The hidden bead helps prop up the Marabou. The fly swims different, and snags less as the bead will not snag on rocks.

Stu's Metal Head Tube, Black/Blue

Stu Foxall's latest creation is a tube fly utilizing the Pro Sportfisher Ultra Sonic Cones. These cones are made of brass and are slotted. The Ultra Sonic Cone adds some weight to the fly, but is still very easy to lift out of the water due to the venting holes, while maintaining the capability to create a vortex behind the disc, allowing soft materials to swim freely instead of collapsing in hard current.

Very nice tie up. Make sure you take a long some of these on your next Steelhead fishing trip.

Neo Skagit Rhea Leech, Special Sauce

Skagit Rhea Leech, a custom design by Grabflies. Design idea came from combining the famous Skagit Minnow with the new Intruder style trailing hook. This fly has lots of action in the water.

An evotion of the Skagit Leech. Tied with Rhea which has lots of movement but doesn't soak up water like Marabou.

This Neo Skagit Leech is tied with a hidden .25" nickle bead. The hidden bead helps prop up the Rhea. The fly swims different, and snags less as the bead will not snag on rocks.

Size: 3 - 4 inches

OPST Lazar Running Line, 40 lb - Product Image
Click for larger image

OPST Lazar Running Line, 40 lb

Pure Skagit Lazar Running Line by OPST is the slickest running line out there. This is the line for those of us who love to launch a cast, sit back, maybe eat a sandwich while the line rushes out of the guides and pulls line off the reel as it comes tight. Lazar Line is hydrophobic, extremely durable, consistent over a broad range of temperatures, and virtually impervious to memory. It features a slight, calculated stretch that allows for extremely sleek and strong knots. Don't like Skagit casting? This stuff will rock with your Scandi head as well. We searched far and wide for the perfect running line and knew we could do better than what was out there. Take your casting enjoyment to a whole new level with Pure Skagit Lazar Line!

Grabflies stock two sizes:

35 lb (0.47 mm diameter)

40 lb (0.52 mm diameter)

I switched over to using this shooting line. It is almost friction free and casts a mile. It comes out of the water with very little drag. This line is thinner than most so go with the 35lb, or if you want a little more to hang onto the 40lb. It will add 10 ft to your casts easily. - Jeff Layton

If you are having a hard time with running/shooting line slipping out from beneath your finger when casting. Learn to cast with two fingers holding the line. Works even in the rain.

Spider Leech - Product Image

Spider Leech

The Spider Leech is a new name for the Rubber Leg K Moal , with the addition of only medium size colored rubber legs and new colors. The name came from the spider leg (fly only has six legs, not eight) look when hanging from my drying rod when I tie them. See photo below.

Rubber Leg K Moal is a K-Moal with rubber legs added, which is a light version of the Kahuna Leech (shows how bead is hidden)

This fly has a weighted bead but it is tied in the rear some - hidden. This effects how the fly swims/swings through the river. It has a flatter/level angle. Also the hidden 1/4 inch nickel bead gives the fly more silhouette - bigger shoulder. NEW for 2017 summer. Size: 2.5 inches.

Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well.

Custom Moal Leeches are tied by Grabflies.com in the good old USA. Moal's are tied using the best materials on the market and are tied to last (super glue, Berkley Fireline Braid 20 LB (double over for 40 LB strength) and, quality hooks.

Klickitat Summer Chartreuse Peekaboo - Product Image

Klickitat Summer Chartreuse Peekaboo

Klickitat Summer Chartreuse Peekaboo by Fish Magnet Flies.

Hot summer Steelhead have been in the river a while, getting lethargic and slow moving in the warming lower oxygen water. I experienced this recently after three days of soft repeated bumps short grabs and poorly hooked fish on fuller dressed Klickitat Sunrise Summer flies.

I decided to switch gears by trying this sparsley dressed fly with a chartreuse peekaboo ice dub body. I trimmed it up a bit more leaving no dressing past the small razor sharp #4 Owner hook.

With one day left I fished down a run I had gotten some short tugs on the day before. As it swung into the soft water, same scenario...bump bump tug and this time some weight! Setting the hook hard ended with a nice 12 lb summer wild fish hooked deep in the nose! The fly...

  • 2.5" long to back off the #4 Owner hook
  • Sparsely dressed no longer than the hook
  • Trimmed marabou and fox shoulder on the bottom side to expose body colors.
  • Easy casting even with a Skandi setup.
  • Any color is fine as long as it's PURPLE!
  • Also see Grabflies EVO version. Deadly and proven.

A custom design by Grabflies. Design idea came from combining the famous Skagit Minnow with the new Intruder style trailing hook. This fly has lots of action in the water with a large profile.

Now the Neo Skagit Leech with Rubber Legs by Grabflies. New (8-4-17) This fly is tied similar to the Skagit Leech but with a little smaller profile and a with hidden .25" nickle bead. Tied with Rabbit instead of Marabou in front of the rear station of prop hackle and four grizzly hackles, and then another Intruder Prop hackle with some Marabou fibers on the stem in Front of bead follower by Flashabou. Swims great and will be even a better Steelhead catching instrument.

Fish Magnet Summer Series, Klickitat Sunrise - Product Image
Click for larger image

Fish Magnet Summer Series, Klickitat Sunrise

These flies are for early summer through fall and are a smaller version of my Fall flies. These flies run about 2.5 inches. The Body colors are peekaboo and come in and out of view as the fly undulates in the water currents. When these flies hit slow water they open up and get very squidy or spidery that fish really seem to dig. This last year or so I have really been targeting the slower water next to a faster seam and the Fish Magnet Flies have evolved to target these fish. I also like the looks of these in faster head of run water because not only do they move well in it but lift out of the water to set your anchor and cast well.

As they are smaller with less materials, they are also cheaper. I still use as much full length ostrich hurl , marabou, and grizzly hackle that I can to maximize movement. These flies are tied on a heavy streamer shank and are heavy enough without additional weight to sink at about a type 3 to 5 rate, so are perfect for lighter setups as well.

I offer three different color combinations and are about the only colors I ever use.

Klickitat Sunrise Purple/Red- Name coined by Jeff here at Grablies for its incredible effectiveness on the Klickitat River. This color combo is my first choice starting as early as June and extremely effective through late fall for Steelhead and King Salmon. For some reason, hatchery steelhead really key in on this color as well on heavily fished rivers all over the West Coast.

Grabflies 10 Foot Tip with Swivel

Custom 10 Foot Tip with Swivel by Grabflies | Taking Sink Tips to a whole new level!

    • Helps eliminate twists and fly tangles when you Spey cast, and swing flies.
    • Allows your fly to swim better on the swing
    • Make it easy to tie on tippets - just tie tippet onto swivel using improved clinch knot or Trilene knot.
    • Also works great for single fly rods - eliminates line twist when fishing buggers.

Using a full 10 foot tip with swivel gives you a smoother transition and cast. Made using the best swivel with a 75 lb breaking strength.

Comes wrapped on Tip Tote (See Tip Tote)

    Sizes: T-8, T-11, T-14, T-17

NEW: T-8 Weight Forward (When casting larger flies or with eight weight rods, often T-8 tips are too light to deliver the fly all the way out - unroll it. This tip comes with a doubled over 12 inch weight forward line welded into it, making this a great tip.)

Also See: Fly Line Tip Swivel | 12 - 24 inch Tip Swive | Two Density Tip with Swivel

    FlyTube Case - Product Image

    FlyTube Case

FlyTube Case is custom designed and made by Jeff Layton at Grabflies.com. FlyTubes are the best way of storing Steelhead and Salmon fly Intruders that have long fibers and Flashabou that can get caught up and crinkled in traditional fly boxes when closing the lids.

FlyTubes are easily stored in your wading jacket pockets or waders. The only problem in the past was organization of the flies in the tubes. Pull out one FlyTube, not the fly you wanted, and then you had to reach in your pocket and find the next FlyTube. Now with this FlyTube Case - a rubber holder that is 4 3/4 inches long that holds five tubes. You can easily pull out five flies at a time.

FlyTube case and tubes are 100% water proof and floats if dropped in the water. FlyTube Case comes with five tubes and clear caps. The tubes are 1/2 inch Diameter.

Select Lengths of 3, 4, and 5 inch lengths.

FlyTubes are not permanently fixed, but rather tightly held in the rubber holder, so they can be replaced and re-position.

    OPST Shank Chuck Tool

You have seen it (or a prototype of it) in our fly tying videos. You have called and emailed and asked about it. And now it's (almost) here: the OPST Shank Chuck Tool. It took us a long time to dial this one in. The challenge was first, to make a tool that would fit with just about any vise on the planet. We succeeded. If this tool does not fit with your vise, we will refund your money. The second challenge was finding a tool that can both shanks and some tubes- by unscrewing the chuck housing, you can flip the inner chuck one way for shanks and the other way for tubes.

The shank will hold shanks down to our Micro Shanks, which are 0.90mm in diameter. Tube adaptor inner diameter: 2mm.

Stu's Jungle Tail Turbo Cone, Black/Blue

These new wide-profile cones create a turbo vortex at the front of a tube fly. The turbo cone gives the fly a unique swimming action. The action combined with the soft materials, which pulsate to mimic breathing, produces a fly that drives fish crazy. Whether fishing in the slowest or hardest of currents, the fly will move and pulsate like no other pattern. In addition to the unique movements, the turbo cone also provides a little bit of weight to help get the fly down. Our Turbo Cone Tube Flies are tied on a 1.25-inch tube with a 10mm turbo cone.

Comes with Size 2 trailing hook.

Guru HD Series II Fly Fishing Reel by Waterworks Lamson

    FREE BACKING (200 yards)

The HD in this reel stands for "Heavy Duty" and this version of Guru, unlike the standard Guru, has both a complete cage design (like the Arx) and type II finish in a pewter-tan color.  Guru HD is a great affordable Saltwater and/or Spey reel. Steadfast and stylish, Guru has long set a standard as a rugged, fully USA-machined ultra-reliable reel at a great price. This season we’ve updated Guru’s spool geometry for enhanced retrieve rates, opened the porting to reduce weight and improve line drying, integrated the counterbalance and introduced a curved cross section arbor for structural stability.

Guru continues to prove that the quest for “enlightenment” can be anything but boring.

    Remix HD Fly Fishing Reel

The Remix HD reel by Waterworks Lamson is the “Heavy Duty” version of the Remix.  This reel has a full-cage design to capture line without failure. This is a great option for an entry-level Switch, Spey, boat or all around heavier duty reel.

A fusion between the free-form structures of a cast spool and the mechanical integrity of a CNC-machined case, Remix is a hybrid. The case, CNC-machined here in the U.S. from 6061 bar-stock aluminum, delivers maximum structural rigidity and durability all wrapped in a harder, brighter finish.  The spool, compatible with the Liquid’s, is pressure cast with radiused compound curves, near zero-radius inside corners and a precise fit and finish. It has a U-shape arbor and narrow format to aid in line control. Remix brings together the best of CNC machining and pressure-cast technologies to deliver an unprecedented level of quality for a bit more than $150.  In addition to the US-made case, all critical drag components are CNC-machined here in the U.S.  And like Liquid, Remix reels are assembled in Boise by our skilled and experienced team.  The result of this Remix?  High performance, reliability, quality assurance and sex appeal.

    Fish Tailing Mitt

    Fishtailing Mitt, Fish Tailing Glove.

Ready to strap onto your wading belt, waist pack...

Comes with two snap clamps, Super-strong elastic coil that stretches out 32 inches.Mitt stays open for easy entry when fighting your fish. You can watch my videos and see this is what Grabflies has been using for years.

    Size Large

Made with mesh that is knot-less as to not scrape or hurt the Steelhead or Salmon. Much better that losing your grip and losing the fish, or have the wild Steelhead or Salmon bang itself on the rock. Also you can control the fish while getting it ready for release. A fish on it's side is in rest state in the water. A Steelhead back side up is going to swim away. With the Fish Mitt you can move a fish from it's side to back side up and reverse if it is fighting you and trying to get away. This allows you quickly to get your camera and get your hero shot. For me the clock is racing when handling wild fish - every second counts. Get your hook out and take your photo and back in the water - 30 seconds is a good turn around.

I use a GoPro, so the camera is shooting video and 30 frames a second. The camera is on already. You can also do photo bursts - a bunch of photos at once. - Jeff Layton

Stu's Jungle Tail Turbo Cone, Pink/Purple

These new wide-profile cones create a turbo vortex at the front of a tube fly. The turbo cone gives the fly a unique swimming action. The action combined with the soft materials, which pulsate to mimic breathing, produces a fly that drives fish crazy. Whether fishing in the slowest or hardest of currents, the fly will move and pulsate like no other pattern. In addition to the unique movements, the turbo cone also provides a little bit of weight to help get the fly down. Our Turbo Cone Tube Flies are tied on a 1.25-inch tube with a 10mm turbo cone.

King Intruder Leech, Pink with Blue

This pattern came from Grabflies "King Intruder Leech, Red" but I have only fished it for Winter Steelhead.

Fly is tied using black cross cut rabbit strip tied on braid line like a Moal Leech, then lots of Rhea spun on, followed by Flashabou, and Guinea and a bead cone. The Black Rabbit core gives this fly lots of silhouette and animates the flashabou.

    Sizes:

    GTL: Grizzly Tailed Leech

A new pattern created by Grabflies, Jeff Layton. 2015/2016 winter has been the season of grizzly hackle into my patterns. It gives the fly a mottled, lighting effect, that Steelhead seem to love.

This fly is tied like a Moal leech but with all the extras found in an Intruder pattern. Unlike most Intruders this pattern is a 360 degree fly (it fishes, and swims good in all angles of the presentation).

    • Broadside presentation
    • As soon as fly hits the water
    • All angles of the swing

    Size: 3 - 3.5 inches

Rainforest Waterproof Waist Pack by OPST

OPST heard may calls for the return of the roll-top waist pack, and we have answered them. Our sturdy waist/sling pack has a roll top, avoiding the inevitable leakage that occurs with zippers. The side straps are adjustable so you can choose how tightly the bag is closed and make sure water stays out. The waist is fully adjustable and features a UTX buckle for added durability. A padded insert keeps your tools and boxes organized and also protects the bag from the inside. The front zippered pocket has drain holes to keep your tools and tippet from soaking for long periods. The pack can be worn with or without the removable sling, making it a perfect crossover hip pack/sling pack.

    Improved Methow Moal

AKA: Two Toned Flash Moal Leech, Blue/Chartreuse

Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well.

The combination of rabbit fur which has incredible life in the water and flashabou creates an illuminated attraction for fish. A real winner!

Two Toned Flash Moal Leech - Flashabou and rabbit wrapped around a string go together. Moal Leeches have great movement in the water. They wiggle and undulate, which moves the flashabou in wave like motion reflecting colorful light waves as the fly swings across the river. Two Toned (color) Flash Moals have two different colors of flashabou tied in. The tail color is tied in after half the fly is wrapped with rabbit. The head flashabou is tied with a length of 2/3's the fly length. This works much better that two colors of flashabou tied in together at the cone.

    Flash Fish Taco

Same Profile as the Fish Taco but tied with more Flashabou.

Jeff Hickman designed the Fish Taco Spey fly specifically for Steelhead and Salmon. When Jeff Hickman gets hungry he thinks of one of his favorite things to eat - fish tacos.

The Fish Taco was designed to be un-weighted and easy to cast with lots of movement.

Like Fish Tacos - a favorite dish for hungry fly fishermen, and every cook has their own recipe. Grabflies has its recipe and custom ties these Fish Tacos by hand in Washougal, Washington.

Grabflies likes to tie Fish Tacos that are spicy and hot, and full and juicy. These Fish Tacos are delicious offerings for Steelhead and Salmon.

Since these Tacos are custom tied, Grabflies offers them in many different flavors and tie ups. You can get them in almost every color, and if you want to fish them deeper you can add Hot Cones.

Jeff Hickman likes to fish Purple Tacos in the morning, bright colors during the day, and black in the evening/dark.

    Size: 2.5 - 3 inches

Size 2 trailing hook, hung with 30 lb. Fire Wire loop.
