Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well. Custom Moal Leeches are tied by Grabflies.com in the good old USA. Moal's are tied using the best materials on the market and are tied to last (super glue, Berkley Fireline Braid 15 LB (double over for 30 LB strength) quality hooks.
If you had to pick one fly to fish for Steelhead with, highly consider a Moal Leech.

I've been tying different versions of this Muddler Moal Leech fly over the years. Now I'm happy with this new pattern. It has a hidden nickel bead to help sink it enough so it swims with movement, but can be swung over snaggy terrain. Fly is 2 - 2.25 inches long (small for a moal leech - summer size). Tied on braid line with #2 SSW Owner hook. Tied with PVC hook holder with Flashabou for tail, Crosscut Rabbit Fur, Micro Barred Voodoo Fibers, Black Deer Belly Hair, Shank, and braid line. Three color patterns - select below (Black/Olive - Olive is more Olive color than photo) Good summer and fall Steelhead pattern (Steelhead love rabbit fur and muddlers). The silhouette with the large spun deer belly hair head gives it a sculpin minnow look.

A custom design by Grabflies. Design idea came from combining the famous Skagit Minnow with the new Intruder style trailing hook. This fly has lots of action in the water with a large profile. This Neo Skagit Leech is a smaller version of the original Skagit Leech. It is tied with a hidden .25" nickle bead. The hidden bead helps prop up the Marabou which has stiff Guinea and Prop Hackle in front of it. The fly swims different, and snags less as the bead will not snag on rocks. This color pattern is very good for: - Clear Water
- Bright Middle Day Conditions
- Flesh Fly Imitation
- Steelhead
- Bull Trout - Dolly Varden
- All Seasons

Sculpin Flies are great for Steelhead, trout from Alaska, Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes. Alaska sculpin baitfish is a key source of protein for resident rainbow trout, Dolly Varden char, steelhead, and pike in Alaska lakes and streams. Jerry French has spent many seasons guiding in Alaska. It is during this time that he honed his trout fishing skills. The Alaskan trout are big, hungry meat eaters and are not shy about eating big flies. Jerry has designed his trout flies to lure the largest trout in the river. The WMD Sculpin is rigged with a size 4 AquaTalon hook.

The Carey is by far one of the most popular lake fishing patterns in British Columbia. It is an exceptional trolling fly, and a great searching pattern. Swing this fly, Still water/lake fish this fly. It works. An attractor variation of the Carey Special. Size 6 hook Tied with Marabou Tail, and Pheasant Collar. The Carey Special traces its roots back to 1920 when Colonel Tom Carey and Dr. Lloyd Day collaborated on a pattern originally called the Monkey Faced Louise or Dredge. Their design featured a dense pheasant rump hackle and a dubbed fur body from a dead marmot Dr. Day had found on his drive to rendezvous with Colonel Carey for a fishing trip. Since this initial prototype, the Carey Special has undergone many mutations. Still, the fly’s core remains the same: a pheasant rump tail and hackle, coupled with a body using a variety of materials.

The Muddler Minnow is one of the most popular fly patterns in the world.
A very good summer/fall Steelhead Muddler Minnow pattern.
When swinging the Muddler the fly moves in and out of the surface film, enticing Steelhead to the strike.
Muddlers are also fished subsurface with sinking tip lines. Muddlers because of their deer hair trap lots of shimmering bubbles of air that fish love.

With many years of intense searching for these anadromous business partners, I have found tying my skaters on a 60° hook has had the most success. The fly skates, pops and gurgles, making it hard for fish to resist. The Hanger is easy to cast and will pop well due to the tail end of the fly being weighed down by the hook. This keeps the legs down and the foam up for that iconic pop. Greatest of all are most of the fish hooked on the 60° jig hook are landed. Black and blue for those early morning dawn patrols and over cast days, orange for bright fish, and white for that 12 O’clock lunch fish when everyone’s taking a nap.

I have been ask this question many times - if you could only choose one fly to fish for Steelhead with, what would it be? Answer Moal Leeches. – Jeff Layton I’ve also caught a lot of other fish on Moals, Trout, Bass, Pike...So try this for some big Browns, Bass, and Pike.

The Woolly Bugger is the most recognizable, and likely the most commonly fished streamer fly ever tied. The woolly bugger attracts fish in fast or slow water, rivers, ponds, and lakes, in dirty water or spring creeks. It imitates crayfish, minnows, sculpin, leeches, and many other natural foods trout love.
White Woolly Buggers represents bait fish, minnows, shiners, so they're great for meat eatting Trout like Browns, Bull Trout, Big Rainbow Trout, Great lakes Steelhead, Bass, Pike, Tierra Del Fuego... I tie this bugger with long white soft Schlappen hackle - good movement in the water and fills in for the body of a minnow.

A Grablies original - a cross between a Bugger Leech and a Montana Nymph. I like to swing flies - always have. Even when I trout fish, I would swing nymphs and or do a full swing with a mend when the fly was a cross from me. When I was Twelve I read "The Trout Fisherman's Bible, by Ray Bergman" I practiced the full drift, long before indicators (which I don't use). What I'm getting at - fishing this fly. It is a nymph over half of the drift, and then when I mend and it swings it is a Bugger then. This fly is good for Steelhead and large Trout. Great lakes Steelhead, and Browns, Pacific Northwest Steelhead, BC Steelhead, and Tierra del Fuego...

Custom tie by Grabflies. Good fly for Trout and Steelhead. Tied on a Ahrex FW580 Wet Fly/Nymph Hooks, Size 6 Swing it or Nymph it = Works Nymphs like giant stone flies live in the rivers for as long as three years before they hatch into winged adults. They are attractive to trout in several sizes, almost year round. As the stone fly nymphs grow they must take over a larger territory. Trout target on these vulnerable treats and will feast until gorged.
