The Intruder Fly Pattern - no that isn't correct. The Intruder Fly originally tied by Jerry French, and Ed Ward, was a concept pattern. The concept was to tie a large fly pattern with a small trailing hook. Before the Intruder, large flies were tied on large hooks. These hooks damaged the Steelhead for release - they were tied on large ott (1/0, 2/0 3/0…) hooks that were cutter hooks that kept slicing into the fish's mouth. Second part of the concept was to tie a fly with two stations - a rear and forward station. This allowed a large fly to cast easier. Since the 1990's this fly has continued to morph. The reason for this is in the word Intruder which refers to two things: 1. The fly concept that Jerry French and Ed Ward developed. 2. An Intruder is something that anadromous fish respond to - other small fish in their redds hanging around to eat their eggs. Large flies tied in an Intruder Style can also represent food like squid and shrimp that steelhead and Salmon have foraged on in the ocean. Intruder Flies for Steelhead, Salmon, and Sea Run BrownsWhat does an Intruder suggest or represent to a Steelhead? Possible Responses:
- Automatic Condition Feeding Response - representation of a squid, prawn or fish.
- Curiosity Response – Large 3 to 6 inch Intruders are large animated attractors that instigate Steelhead, Salmon. And sea run Browns into striking.
- Survival Competition Response – An Intruder may eat eggs, and the survival response is to remove they prey.
- Territorial Competition Response – when Steelhead come into a holding area they often setup a territory. When an Intruder swings through their area and bite response is initiated.
- Anger Response – an Intruder has disturbed the peace, a Steelhead’s space.
What to Look for in an Intruder:
1. Size (bigger is often better) This depends on water clarity and water temperature. Clear water = smaller; Cold water = larger. 2. Shape, profile and outline (what does the fly look like when it is wet and swinging through the current. 3. Color - Steelhead are color-conscious to the extreme. 4. Movement – does the fly have movement in the water, not the air. 5. Casting ability – can you cast the big Intruder. Big flies = big rods, and heavier sink tips. Or adjust your cast. You can Perry Poke Spey Cast a big Intruder if you are having trouble. 6. Durability – will they fly stand up to casting a fishing punishment.

The Intruder has quickly become one of the most popular steelhead patterns on the West Coast. It is a large fly that was designed by the West Coast steelhead guide Ed Ward, with the help and feedback of fellow anglers Scott Howell, Jerry French, and Dec Hogan. Since its inception, there have been numerous variations, and it is safe to say that it is more of a style of fly rather than a pattern. Our Sili-Leg Intruders are tied on medium length 35mm Waddington Shanks with 3/16-inch brass eyes. Stock flies come with a Gamakatsu Octopus size 2 hook. A Black, Purple, Pink, Moal Supreme Leech is as good as it gets. Tied with hook holder to help prevent hook fouling, and natural Micro Barred Voodoo Fibers for legs.
Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well. Custom Moal Leeches are tied by Grabflies.com in the good old USA. Moal's are tied using the best materials on the market and are tied to last (super glue, Braid Line 20 LB (double over for 40 LB strength) and, quality Owner size 1 hook. Size: 3 inches

Tied like a Fish Taco Fly but using Rhea instead of Ostrich Plume. This gives the fly a little less silhouette, but with the same action, plus Rhea really stands out and moves in the water. These are the two primary colors I use in the summer and fall. Black/Purple/Red and Black/Chartreuse and Blue - Methow color Scheme (where I first discovered this color combination). Unweighted and easy to cast, and has more movement because of the Rhea. Size: 2.5 inches Tied on a FS SENYOS ARTICULATED SHANK 25MM BLACK Tied with an Owner size two SW hook. A custom design by Grabflies. Design idea came from combining the famous Skagit Minnow with the new Intruder style trailing hook. This fly has lots of action in the water with a large profile. This is a smaller version of the Neo Skagit Leech. It is not a mini, hence the name bijou, smaller, elegant version. It is tied on a FS SENYOS ARTICULATED SHANK 25MM BLACK and is lightly weighted with some 1.5 inches of medium lead wire wrapped around short shank (this is needed for all the materials, weighted enough to make it swim optimally, great movement). Fly is 2 inches, long but with some trailing material may drag it out to 2.5 inches. Stinger - trailing hook extends back with mono. Hook can be replaced. Size 2 Owner SSW hook. This is a slow tie, I can only tie about two an hour. See Neo Skagit Leeches (Click Here)

Hartwick's Hoser Tube presents a giant, flowing profile in the water. Weight has been added in the form of a tungsten cone. A custom design by Grabflies. Design idea came from combining the famous Skagit Minnow with the new Intruder style trailing hook. This fly has lots of action in the water with a large profile. This Neo Methow Skagit Leech is a smaller version of the original Methow Skagit Leech, which has more black in it. It is tied with a hidden nickle bead - smaller sizes lighter cone. The hidden bead helps prop up the Marabou. The fly swims different, and snags less as the bead will not snag on rocks. Regular size has a hidden .25 inch bead, and is three inches long. Fly is tied and glued in every step of it's construction - tied to last. Size: 2.5 - 3 inches Hook Sizes: # 2 & 1 Owner SSW hook | OPST # 1 Barbless Neo Skagit Ostrich Leech, Methow (Click Here) Neo Skagit Leech, Methow CW (Clear Water (Click Here)

The original Intruder designed by Jerry French and tied by Aqua Flies! The birth of the Intruder was in the Pacific Northwest. It has gone through many evolutions and surely it will continue to evolve, but Jerry's Intruder as it is tied today is a fish catcher. Tied using composite loops, UV materials and a Gamakatsu trailer hook, confidence is high when using this fly. Jerry's Intruder is approximately 3" long. Single Station Intruder is about 2" in length.

Also See: Sili-Leg Intruders, Red/Orange Sili-Leg Intruders, Black/Blue

The Chromewrecker was originally developed by Lucas Meeker as a large-profile, un-weighted pattern for targeting big water Steelhead in the lower flows of late summer and fall. Fishing big flies un-weighted with a heavier sink tip allows the fly to keep the large profile of a big weighted winter fly, but stay up in the column to snag less in broader and more consistent gradient runs. Many big steelhead flies sink slowly, especially un-weighted, but the Chromewrecker is tied with sparse materials that don't slow the sinkrate. As the pattern evolved over three years, Luke added weighted variants and colorways targeting winter Steelhead and Chinook. Another central idea in this pattern is to use multiple shades of colors and contrasting points to build blended colors and markings that more closely resemble how colors blend and fade in nature (even when the color is bright!)... like the blended markings on the flank of a bright chrome Steelhead.

A larger version of our standard intruder, but tied on a tube, the Chinook Intruder is approximately 4” in length. Using a generous amount of flash and UV enhanced ostrich and schlappen, this intruder is sure to anger a chinook into striking the fly. Rigged with a stout ring eye black nickel hook. Also an excellent large Intruder Steelhead fly.

Using long flowing materials is one of the key Intruder features. The rhea is a small South American ostrich-like bird with long flowing feathers, and it's the perfect match for the Intruder. The use of rhea was popularized by Paul Miller a number of years ago. Stu's Ostrich Intruders are tied on 40mm shanks with 5/32-inch brass eyes. Stock flies come with a Gamakatsu Octopus hook. Great Steelhead Fly

The Sputnik Tube Intruder is a blend of traditional Intruder styling and European highlights. A fusion of natural and synthetic materials; Finn Raccoon, Arctic Fox, Ostrich, Predator Wrap and Marabou add to this flies swimming action. The Finn Raccoon wing is reminiscent of Scandi styles. Two stations similar to Intruders. A collar weight behind the front station helps to get the fly down. The Sputnik has great movement and a profile in the water that is irresistible to fish.

These new wide-profile cones create a turbo vortex at the front of a tube fly. The turbo cone gives the fly a unique swimming action. The action combined with the soft materials, which pulsate to mimic breathing, produces a fly that drives fish crazy. Whether fishing in the slowest or hardest of currents, the fly will move and pulsate like no other pattern. In addition to the unique movements, the turbo cone also provides a little bit of weight to help get the fly down. Our Turbo Cone Tube Flies are tied on a 1.25-inch tube with a 10mm turbo cone. Comes with Size 2 trailing hook.

A little "Intruder" style fly, easy to cast, a nice little mid strata searching pattern. This is a caster's dream. It is sparse, light, and casts like a rocket. It has a TINY set of eyes on it that gives it just enough weight to get down a bit when desired but isn't a chore to cast.

Moal's are tied using the best materials on the market and are tied to last (super glue, Berkley Fireline Braid 15 LB (double over for 30 LB strength) and, quality hooks.

The Hybrid, A very serious Steelhead Fly (Solid colors good for Salmon too). (NEW Design, Fall 2015) I have designed similar Steelhead flies like this pattern. It is a refinement. The Hybrid also comes articulated (more movement) if you choose that option. Also this pattern comes with the new tip dyed Ostrich Plumes that really add movement, plus with the added Ostrich Spey Plumes tied in under the larger tip dyed plumes gives the fly more silhouette but without much water absorption so it is pretty easy to cast for a big fly. When the black dyed tips of the Ostrich move the fly appears more lively in the water.

Greg's Kriller Constructed on the banks of the Kanektok River the killer krill, or Kriller, was designed for maximum castabilty as well as its flaring motion when swinging across hydraulic “fences” in the water column. With the weight of the dumbbell eyes at the back of the shank, the Kriller swings deep with more of a downward-diagonal profile than most traditional patterns. A devouring size for both chrome Chinook and Steelhead, having the eyes closer to the hook attracts some of the most aggressive eats you can find near tidewater!

HoBo Spey - custom tied by Grabflies using quality (best) materials: A great time tested and proven Steelhead pattern. Black and blue is money for Steelhead. HoBo has lots of movement in soft water because of the Marabou. Grabflies ties this pattern with a dubbing ball before Intruder Prop hackle and then black Marabou. This stops the Marabou from collapsing flat, but instead gives the fly shape and movement. Also see Fish Taco (click here)
