Hexagenia Nymph's are a favorite snack for steelhead no matter what time of year. Work Great For: Great lakes Steelhead, Tierra Del Fuego Browns, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout... Swing them, dead drift them, retrieve them... Hex nymphs are important to Michigan fly fishers because their distribution density is vast, the physical size is easy to see and calorie-rich, and the realistic swimming movement all contribute to its success. Steelhead anglers know this pattern to work extremely well fall through spring just as trout anglers know its importance come June when the nymphs get active just prior to the celebrated hex hatch. Tied on a Daiichi #1760 Size 6 Nymph/Wet Fly Hook

Nymphing for steelhead and sea run browns is a very effective technique. In the rivers of the Pacific Northwest and the Midwest, nymphing is quickly becoming the go-to method for many anglers fishing for steelhead. The hooks used for our nymphs are stout enough to hold the heaviest steelhead or the sea run browns of Tierra del Fuego.

RIO’S KAHUNA LT is an ingenious and subtle strike indicator made of a piece of high floating fly line with the core removed from the middle, leaving an empty tunnel. Simply break off the required length of indicator and thread the leader though the tunnel. Each packet contains a simple wire threader to make this easier. The end result is an incredibly sensitive strike indicator that grips on to a tapered leader and stays in place without any damage to the leader. Each packet contains 3, 1ft length of Kahuna LT in Chartreuse, Orange and White. Use a waterproof marker to color the white indicator to any color you like. We recommend the "thin" indicator for calm water and smaller flies, while the thicker one will be more easily visible in rougher water and lower light.

This is my version of the Teeny Nymph. I have a gold tinsel tag on mine. Growing up as a young fly fisher I used this fly in Central Oregon, and caught so many trout with it - it became my go to fly. I swung this fly. I also used it in still water and it did good, but for me swinging this fly I did the best, and I caught lots of big browns with it. Fly is tied with Ringneck Pheasant Tail Feathers. I found the double bearded/legged version to be the best. I myself have caught Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, and Smallmouth Bass on the Teeny Nymph. Fly is unweighted
Tied on a Ahrex NS110 Nordic Salt Streamer Hook . I super glue the bare hook so when I wrap the Pheasant it adheres to the hook. Not too much glue but enough to help give this fly some longevity. Two sizes, 8, and 6

A Grablies original - a cross between a Bugger Leech and a Montana Nymph. I like to swing flies - always have. Even when I trout fish, I would swing nymphs and or do a full swing with a mend when the fly was a cross from me. When I was Twelve I read "The Trout Fisherman's Bible, by Ray Bergman" I practiced the full drift, long before indicators (which I don't use). What I'm getting at - fishing this fly. It is a nymph over half of the drift, and then when I mend and it swings it is a Bugger then. This fly is good for Steelhead and large Trout. Great lakes Steelhead, and Browns, Pacific Northwest Steelhead, BC Steelhead, and Tierra del Fuego...
Marabou tail, Ringneck Pheasant dyed Black Wing Case. Tied on a AHREX NS110 Streamer Hook, Size 6 - very sharp, quality hook.

Custom tie by Grabflies. Good fly for Trout and Steelhead. Tied on a Ahrex FW580 Wet Fly/Nymph Hooks, Size 6 Swing it or Nymph it = Works Nymphs like giant stone flies live in the rivers for as long as three years before they hatch into winged adults. They are attractive to trout in several sizes, almost year round. As the stone fly nymphs grow they must take over a larger territory. Trout target on these vulnerable treats and will feast until gorged.
