Winter Steelhead Fliesfor Washington, Oregon, Northern California, British Columbia, Great Lakes Steelhead Think big, large profile, lots of movement (a fly that will motivate a Steelhead to move in cold water). Other than that summer steelhead flies can work in the winter, and winter steelhead flies can work in the summer. I use Moal leeches all year round with excellent results. An exception to the above would be for very clear low water in the winter, then think small bright and flashy. Large Intruder Flies get the job done. Here is an article slideshow about Winter Steelhead fishing in the Pacific Northwest that Grabflies, Jeff Layton wrote: https://www.grabflies.com/pdf/WinterSteelhead.pdf | Jeff Layton | Grabflies, with a large Winter Steelhead (Custom Fish Taco Flies) | (Custom Fish Taco Supreme Flie) | (Custom Rhea Fish Tacos) | (Aqua Flies)

Hartwick's Hoser Tube presents a giant, flowing profile in the water. Weight has been added in the form of a tungsten cone. Not only does this cone add weight, but it is tied in reverse so it creates a solid bump where the marabou is tied in. The marabou will not collapse and the profle remains, even in the fastest water.

The Intruder has quickly become one of the most popular steelhead patterns on the West Coast. It is a large fly that was designed by the West Coast steelhead guide Ed Ward, with the help and feedback of fellow anglers Scott Howell, Jerry French, and Dec Hogan. Since its inception, there have been numerous variations, and it is safe to say that it is more of a style of fly rather than a pattern. Our Sili-Leg Intruders are tied on medium length 35mm Waddington Shanks with 3/16-inch brass eyes. Stock flies come with a Gamakatsu Octopus size 2 hook. Also See: Sili-Leg Intruders, Red/Orange Sili-Leg Intruders, Pink/Black

Stu Foxall's latest creation is a tube fly utilizing the Pro Sportfisher Ultra Sonic Cones. These cones are made of brass and are slotted. The Ultra Sonic Cone adds some weight to the fly, but is still very easy to lift out of the water due to the venting holes, while maintaining the capability to create a vortex behind the disc, allowing soft materials to swim freely instead of collapsing in hard current. Very nice tie up. Make sure you take a long some of these on your next Steelhead fishing trip. Comes with hook.

Greg's Kriller Constructed on the banks of the Kanektok River the killer krill, or Kriller, was designed for maximum castabilty as well as its flaring motion when swinging across hydraulic “fences” in the water column. With the weight of the dumbbell eyes at the back of the shank, the Kriller swings deep with more of a downward-diagonal profile than most traditional patterns. A devouring size for both chrome Chinook and Steelhead, having the eyes closer to the hook attracts some of the most aggressive eats you can find near tidewater!

The Hybrid, A very serious Steelhead Fly (Solid colors good for Salmon too). (NEW Design, Fall 2015) I have designed similar Steelhead flies like this pattern. It is a refinement. The Hybrid also comes articulated (more movement) if you choose that option. Also this pattern comes with the new tip dyed Ostrich Plumes that really add movement, plus with the added Ostrich Spey Plumes tied in under the larger tip dyed plumes gives the fly more silhouette but without much water absorption so it is pretty easy to cast for a big fly. When the black dyed tips of the Ostrich move the fly appears more lively in the water.

Great Fly for the bright sun Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well. The combination of rabbit fur which has incredible life in the water and flashabou creates an illuminated attraction for fish. A real winner! Two Toned Flash Moal Leech - Flashabou and rabbit wrapped around a string go together. Moal Leeches have great movement in the water. They wiggle and undulate, which moves the flashabou in wave like motion reflecting colorful light waves as the fly swings across the river. Two Toned (color) Flash Moals have two different colors of flashabou tied in. The tail color is tied in after half the fly is wrapped with rabbit. The head flashabou is tied with a length of 2/3's the fly length. This works much better that two colors of flashabou tied in together at the cone.

This pattern came from Grabflies "King Intruder Leech, Red" but I have only fished it for Winter Steelhead. In off color rivers like the Hoh river on the Olympic Peninsula. My first try with this fly I caught two Steelhead and no other flies were producing any results. I used a four inch King Intruder Leech, Pink on the Hoh, but clearer water rivers I use the three inch size. Fly is tied using black cross cut rabbit strip tied on braid line like a Moal Leech, then lots of Rhea spun on, followed by Flashabou, and Guinea and a bead cone. The Black Rabbit core gives this fly lots of silhouette and animates the flashabou.
Sizes: 4 inch | Size 2 Owner Hook. Only six left in stock - I'm out of stock on long Pink Rhea, so this is the last.

Heavy cone and bright flash, this baby works for steelhead and salmon. Here's a new one for us that promises to be a silver, pink and chum salmon killer... not to mention a good, bright steelhead pattern. The conehead on the Chrome Magnet get it deep fast and then the generous proportions of Flashabou kick in and throw lots of flash and movement. This is a no brainer for your trip to Alaska for salmon.

A little "Intruder" style fly, easy to cast, a nice little mid strata searching pattern. This is a caster's dream. It is sparse, light, and casts like a rocket. It has a TINY set of eyes on it that gives it just enough weight to get down a bit when desired but isn't a chore to cast.

BigMoal MT Leech - Mega Moal Leech with Marabou tail like a woolly bugger. NEW - now with articulated tail Tied with two different tail options: - Steelhead/Salmon/Sea-Run Brown Trout
- Toothy Critters - Pike/Muskie
This hybrid Mega Moal Leech has become the new "go to" winter fly. Just like the Mega Moal this fly moves tough winter Steelhead. The BigMoal MT which is custom tied by Grabflies.com has caught Steelhead for Grabflies this winter after already fishing the run with a Mega Moal. The different accents and tail action seem to make that subtle difference. This fly also has becomes popular for Pike, Muslie, and Sea-run Browns The advantages of the BigMoal MT are: - Tail Wiggles and Fly Snakes through the water
- TheBigMoal MT measures 6 - 6.5 inches long, but only 5 inches of rabbit fur, 1.5 inches of Marabou.
- Trailing hook with the added Marabou tied directly on hook gets fouled less when making long Spey casts.
- Fly is custom ordered and you can custom designed your fly to get that perfect color combination for your river.
Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well because of the smaller offset trailer hook. Select - Add different color Marabou tails Select - Add different color flash to Marabou tails Custom Select Bead and Conehead colors Select Size to be tied (default size is 6 inches, but depending on river water clarity you can have order your custom BigMoal MT Leech flies smaller (6 inch, 5 inch, and 4 inch)

Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well. The tried and True Mother of all Leeches. The classic Strung Out MOAL (Mother of all Leeches) is the one thst started it all. Invented by Derek Fergus is is one heck of a pattern. These really are a pattern you need if you hunt Steelhead. Because we use a Octopus hook the short shank holds fish far better allowing more fish to hand. Because it is tied on a string (gel spun) the fly tends to wiggle and swim in the current. Specially swinging them. Size 2 trailing hook - 2.5 - 3" long (custom flies tied with bead heads)
Also see Summer Moal Leeches, 2 1/4 inches (Click Here) The Moal Leech catches Steelhead in all conditions. Add it to your fly box. You will never look back. "I wanted to thank you for your fast service and a great product. I have been fly fishing for over forty years and have caught hundreds of trout and salmon and even a few bonefish but I had never caught a steelhead on a fly before last weekend. With my fifth cast of your black and purple MOAL into a nice Clackamas riffle I hooked and landed a small hatchery summer hen. I attached a picture although it doesn't show the fly too well (my hands were still shaking)." - Paul Boucher

Large Profile Sculpin Fly. Good for Dolly, Bull trout, Steelhead, Brown Trout, Bass, Pike.
Lots of action
Size 2 trailing hook Two colors: Olive and Black Size 2 The popularity of this fly started in Alaska with the Dolly Lama. This is a Dorian inspired version of the old one made much better. It capitalizes on the conehead, Barred Dos-Tone rabbit zonker strips, and subtle flash. It is a devil to tie but well worth it if your going to seriously fish it. If your taking a expensive trip to Alaska then be sure to have these with you. Keep them to yourself as guides and your buddies will do anything they can to get their hands on some.

These are small Moal Leeches with trailing eggs, now tied custom using UV2 Eggs. Great Flesh Flies for Alaska. This flesh version of the moal leech is great early and late season. Try him on the swing, dead drift. The added attraction of the bead makes a big difference. A great fly for any Alaska - fishing for rainbows, chinook, coho or sockeye. This fly is also a great coastal winter steelhead fly, particularly in small streams.

In the summer I will put several skating or muddler type flies into one tube. For big steelhead flies it a must have item. I have tried so many different fly boxes, but it was always the bulk that gets in the way of Spey casting, or closing the lid down and munching the flash of marabou that gave birth to this simple fly storage solution." - Jeff Layton

Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well. The Spirit River Fergus' Strung Out Moal Leech sized just for Salmon & Steelhead is the pattern that started the Strung-Out revolution. Tied entirely on a string, the Mother of All Leeches (MOAL Leech) is quite possibly the best leech pattern we have ever fished. Tons of movement, subtle flash, and short shank hook for a drastically increased landing ratio. Give it a shot, we know you'll soon feel the same. Sizes: 2 inch summer | 3 1/4 inch all season

Senyo's OCD is a great fly in low water conditions because it's unweighted and 3 1/2 inches long. Tied using Senyo's articulated shank, ostrich, and Angel Hair, for a fly that swims well in the water. Shank length: 25mm. Size 2 Intruder hook. Very nice tie up by Aqua Flies. Similar to a Fish Taco - good/great fly for Steelhead.

The Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is a searching style attractor baitfish pattern. Due to its synthetic build, this fly pattern is extremely durable, lightweight, and provides a serious amount of movement while it swims. The A.I. holds a great profile, retains its shimmer and translucency, and is the perfect option to combat changing water conditions. A proven pattern across the Great Lakes Region to Canadian/Alaskan waters and the West Coast. This fly has lots of movement for Steelhead.

Senyo's GL Predator Scandi: Greg Senyo likes to blend traditional Atlantic salmon and steelhead tying techniques with modern synthetic materials, and he has done that with the Predator Scandi series. Tied on a 40mm Senyo shank and using the Senyo Predator Wrap, this fly sparkles in the water. As with all of Greg's patterns, the Gamakatsu hook is attached point down.

The original Intruder designed by Jerry French and tied by Aqua Flies! The birth of the Intruder was in the Pacific Northwest. It has gone through many evolutions and surely it will continue to evolve, but Jerry's Intruder as it is tied today is a fish catcher. Tied using composite loops, UV materials and a Gamakatsu trailer hook, confidence is high when using this fly. Jerry's Intruder is approximately 3" long. Single Station Intruder is about 2" in length.

A custom design by Grabflies. Design idea came from combining the famous Skagit Minnow with the new Intruder style trailing hook. This fly has lots of action in the water with a large profile. This is a smaller version of the Neo Skagit Leech. It is not a mini, hence the name bijou, smaller, elegant version. It is tied on a FS SENYOS ARTICULATED SHANK 25MM BLACK and is lightly weighted with some 1.5 inches of medium lead wire wrapped around short shank (this is needed for all the materials, weighted enough to make it swim optimally, great movement). Fly is 2 inches, long but with some trailing material may drag it out to 2.5 inches. Stinger - trailing hook extends back with mono. Hook can be replaced. Size 2 Owner SSW hook. This is a slow tie, I can only tie about two an hour. See Neo Skagit Leeches (Click Here)

The Evo Bunny Supreme is weighted enough to get the rabbit down - swims great. The fly is tied with weighted wire (.025 - .030). This is used to create an enlarged body that helps keep the rabbit wing swimming higher and off the hook to help prevent fouling - see photo. I've been working a long time playing with methods to do this. Here it is! Size: 2 - 2.5 inches Materials:

Moal leeches are tied entirely on a string with a trailer hook at the back. This gives the fly greater action than a fly tied on a rigid hook. More fish are landed with the Moal fly as well. The tried and True Mother of all Leeches. The classic Strung Out MOAL (Mother of all Leeches) is the one thst started it all. Invented by Derek Fergus is is one heck of a pattern. These really are a pattern you need if you hunt Steelhead. Because we use a Octopus hook the short shank holds fish far better allowing more fish to hand. Because it is tied on a string (braid, 20 lb, doubled over) the fly tends to wiggle and swim in the current. Specially swinging them. Size 2 trailing Owner hook - 2.5" - 3" long (custom flies tied with bead heads)

With the Reverse Marabou Tube, Tom Larimer solves this problem by tying it backwards on the tube so the marabou fibers point forward, giving a bigger profile with a smaller amount of material. The smaller amount of material helps it sink fast, and that sink rate is really important as we mentioned above. - Super simple, yet deadly effective
- The marabou is tied in facing forward to give it extra bulk without the weight
- Both winter and summer steelhead love to eat marabou
- Tube fly with included hook

A custom design by Grabflies. Design idea came from combining the famous Skagit Minnow with the new Intruder style trailing hook. This fly has lots of action in the water with a large profile. This Neo Skagit Leech is a version of the original Skagit Leech tied by Grabflies. The original version was tied with a hidden .25" nickle bead. The hidden bead helps prop up the Marabou which has stiff Prop Hackle in front of it. The fly swims different, and snags less as the bead will not snag on rocks. This design has heavy wire wrapped underneath a prop ball then wrapped over with diamond braid. Red/Orange - very good in off color water and sunny conditions. Size: 3 inches | #1 SSW Owner hook Fly is tied and glued in every step of it's construction - tied to last.
